Abstract

Drawing from the theoretical-methodological bases of Glotopolitics and the Historiography of Linguistics, this study aims at analyzing the justifications for the legitimacy of Spanish teaching in Brazilian schools. Through the analysis of comments written in a poll on the Chamber of Deputies’ website around the approval of a bill for the obligation of Spanish teaching in basic education, released in 2019, a discursive parallel was drawn with didactic materials from the 1940s, when that language was given an extensive place within the educational system. From a historiographical and glotopolitical point of view, the analysis points for similarities around discourses in defense of Spanish between the two periods, especially with regards to the economic aspect given to the language, and that this continuity reveals our need to review the reasons for the assurance of laws that place Spanish as a legitimate school subject.
