This article examines the role of translanguaging in the construction of impoliteness and identity indexing in audiovisual products, focusing on the series Élite (2018). Drawing on a multimodal approach (Mondada, 2018, 2022) and Culpeper’s (1996, 2017) impoliteness model, the study analyzes a scene from the first episode in which English and Spanish alternate, and sarcasm emerges as a central interactional resource. The findings indicate that translanguaging, while not an impoliteness strategy per se, functions as a discursive resource that intensifies face-threatening acts and contributes to the construction of social identities marked by class distinctions and linguistic capital, in the context analyzed . Furthermore, the analysis shows that the multimodal dimension, including gestures, facial expressions, and framing, plays a central role in meaning-making and in the production of impoliteness. In the context of audiovisual translation, it is observed that translation choices reconfigure these effects, particularly in the English dubbing, where the replacement of Spanish with French attenuates identity markers and produces a domestication effect on the character.
